Mmm… Tracheas
Lately we’ve been buying dried lamb tracheas for the dogs. They are a natural source of Glucosamine and Chronditon which are good for the joints. We buy lots of “gross” treats such as pig snouts, intestinal casings, bully sticks and occasionally chicken livers, hearts or giblets. They love all of them. Do any of you feed your pugs treats like these?

Of course we bought enough so Jed could have one too!

Mama sometimes lets us chew on hooves or gives us pig ears but we’ve never had any of the treats Roy and Gwen have! We’ll have to add those to the grocery list. :-)

My humans buy me all kind of treats… but I never tried pig ears or something like that… they are thinking to buy some of that… Usually they give me pressed rawhide bones… I love them! :P

Barkley and Augie LOVE bully sticks and pig tails, but Augie gets so possessive of them, we usually have to take them away. If Barkley even looks at Augie when he has a bully stick, Augie lets out an ear-piercing yell. Silly pugs.

We do pig ears once in a while. We use to buy all those puglicious treats but now we have gone to cleaner (they make a mess dragging their treats all over the house, esp. the sofa), less fatty treats. Naturally, Puggies love meat treats but our Vet said they needed to lose weight. Porky & Brownie now share one banana a day, baby carrots, one slice of cheese a week, and soy yogurt. Funny thing is we don’t eat this healthy! We buy organic and healthy for the boys! We are proud to say after a recent Vet visit, Porky has gone down to 23lbs (from nearly 30lbs) and Brownie is 20lbs (24lbs). They deserve a treat! :)

Hey, sorry to be a poop, but these types of things are actually really bad for dogs.
You can replace whatever they get from such things with food sup’s & doggy vitamins.
There’s currently a recal on pig ears, because of salmonella.
Dogs should not be given rawhides, pigs ears or any other dried body part to chew on. These are a terrible choking hazard and many dogs have choked to death on raw hides. Rawhide has to go through several rounds of chemical cleanings in order to remove all the hair from the hide. These tend to not be rinsed off fully and the chemicals thus get ingested by the dog. Dried body parts are also a bacteria hazard. Dogs’ digestion systems are designed for fast processing of meat and bones, and that speed is their natural defence against bacteria. But dogs don’t digest rawhide, it sits around in their stomach for some time before being passed in the same state as it went in. This can result in food poisoning, the mildest symptom of which is diarrhoea and vomitting.
I just wanted to let you know. :)

Thanks for the info Kelly. I hadn’t heard of these issues before. We don’t feed pig ears, rawhide, etc. because Roy & Gwen are gulpers and we’ve had too many choking experiences where I’ve had to use the doggie heimlich maneuver. We only buy the tracheas, etc. that break apart easily and don’t pose a choking hazard. Do you have any links to more information?
